£ 4 million regeneration boost for mid-¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥

Increased parking provision, community outdoor event spaces, new visitor facilities, road and junction improvements and new visitor facilities are just some of the benefits to come from ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥â€™s Tarbert and Lochgilphead Regeneration Fund.

Working with key partners, the fund has already delivered a number of benefits for local communities. They include:

  • Redevelopment of the Gleaner oil site (Phase 1) – working with Scottish Canals, the Egg Shed, a new visitor information centre opened in 2019. The building provides community meeting space and a history of the Crinan Canal.
  • Tarbert Harbour – shore side facilities - new wash and laundry facilities for harbour users and a car park completed March 2021 provides additional parking spaces to support events and activities in the harbour area.
  • Barmore/Garvel Road junction improvements – completed in February 2020 Colchester Square/¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Street, Lochgilphead – public realm works upgraded and pavements extended along ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Street and completed May 2021.
  • Lochgilphead Front Green – works included an upgraded play area, new public square and open space, completed in August 2022.

Award-winning

Investment and regeneration in the area has led to a number of awards, recognising the difference the improvements have made to the community. The Egg Shed won the Architectural Regeneration Scottish Design Award 2020. Lochgilphead Front Green and ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Street improvement works won the Scotland Loves Local Streets and Spaces Award in 2022.

Councillor Alastair Redman, Policy Lead, Economic Growth and Communities, said: “The support provided by the Tarbert and Lochgilphead Regeneration Fund has already been enormously valuable in improving infrastructure, facilities and public realm across these areas, adding real value to the lives of people in our local communities.

“We look forward to the remaining projects progressing as planned, further enhancing our towns and reinforcing ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ and Bute’s appeal as a great place to live, work and visit.â€

Ongoing projects

The two initiatives currently in progress including upgrades to the public realm in Ardrishaig. Construction began on site last summer that will make it easier to access the waterfront, develop the garden areas and create new public footpaths. The work is on schedule to complete by summer 2023.  Read about the latest updates on the council website /ardrishaig/public-realm.

The fund also retains an allocation for the second phase of the redevelopment of the former Gleaner site. The Council is working in partnership with Scottish Canals to confirm proposals for this area of land, which will be an important next step for the Ardrishaig community.
