Apprentice Tom works his way up the ranks

Tom McLaughlin is a great example of someone who has worked their way up the ranks since starting an apprenticeship with ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥â€™s Digital Learning Team in 2017, aged 21.

Having previously worked in a junior role in IT, Tom wanted to continue his technology career, and a Modern Apprenticeship allowed him to do this while pursuing qualifications and applying his technology skills in new ways, such as supporting pupils and staff in educational environments.

Tom completed his apprenticeship in 2019, having gained a Level 8 (and Level 6) Diploma for Information Technology and Telecommunications Professionals, as well as passing an exam to obtain Microsoft Certified Professional certification in Installing and Configuring Windows 10.

He said: “I would consider passing this exam to be the highlight of my apprenticeship, as I revised extensively for it, including making use of Microsoft Virtual Academy to train in PowerShell and Windows 10.

“The courses I attended and the coursework undertaken as part of achieving my diploma allowed me to develop skills across a range of technical areas, including networking and management of Windows desktop PCs and servers.

“Since completing my apprenticeship, I have been working within the Digital Learning Team in a new role as a Digital Learning Systems Administrator and have completed a Level 8 Diploma for Information Security Professionals.  During my studies for this qualification, I learned essential skills in the increasingly important and prevalent field of cyber security.  This, and online safety, are important not only for organisations, but for the staff and pupils I work with in my role.

“I really enjoyed my apprenticeship. My hope for the future is to continue working in a technology career and apply my technical skills to benefit education.â€
