Public event planned for Campbeltown Flood Protection Scheme

The project team behind Campbeltown’s £15.2 million Flood Protection Scheme (FPS) are inviting local business and residents to a pop-up event to find out more about the scheme.

The informal event will take place in Burnside Square on Wednesday 31 August between 3pm and 9pm, and is a great opportunity for people to go along and have a chat with representatives from ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, Dawson WAM and Aecom before work starts next month.

Campbeltown has suffered significant flooding over the years due to a variety of factors, including an out of date, undersized sewer system. Now, however, the council is carrying out a range of large-scale improvements to minimise this risk for the local community.

The scheme, which is 80% funded by the Scottish Government and 20% funded by ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, will be rolled out in four phases over the next two years: Millknowe, Burnside Square, Dalaruan and Meadows.

New pipelines will be installed across the town to separate surface water drainage from domestic sewers, and a new ‘storage dam’ will also be created between Snipefield and Hillside Road to slow the flow of water during a storm. An underground controlled storage area will also be created in Burnside Square.

A number of the town’s roads will benefit from flood protection and road surface improvements as a result, including Witchburn Road, Tomaig Road, Meadowburn Place, Smith Drive, Bengullion Road, Burnside Square, Burnside Street, Glebe Street, Dell Road, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Street, Castlehill and Lorne Street.

Some homes and businesses will also be eligible for Property Flood Resilience (PFR) to improve the standard of protection. This includes things such as removable flood protection barriers on doors, automatic-closing airbricks, and small pump systems.
