Two pupils from Oban High School have won this year’s Poppy Scotland Learning Competition.
Archie Malloch and Ruaridh Blackadder designed a football strip and came up with the idea of organising a charity football match to raise funds for the charity.
The idea really impressed the judges because of its links to the ‘Christmas Truce’ football match that was played between British and German troops in the trenches on Christmas Day during WW1. The judging panel was also delighted with the fundraising angle of their entry and the fact that the boys came up with the idea of having retired players take part.
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥â€™s Policy Lead for Education, Councillor Yvonne McNeilly, said: “Well done Archie and Ruaridh and what a fantastic idea.
“It’s important that our young people remember the sacrifices that were made in past conflicts and this concept is a lovely way to mark remembrance of these. Well done for helping to put ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ and Bute on the map yet again.â€
Peter Bain, Executive Head Teacher, said: “Our Remembrance Service and the lessons and events leading up to it play a prominent part of our school calendar. This fantastic achievement will add another layer of awareness to the events close upon us. A fantastic achievement. Well done Archie and Ruaridh!â€
