Sandbank Primary School’s new early level Gaelic class is proving a popular choice, with all 24 of its registered spaces already taken.
The purpose Early Learning and Childcare facility, or Sgoil-Àraich as it is called in Gaelic, has been funded by the Scottish Government and will open its doors for the first time this August.
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥â€™s Policy Lead for Gaelic, Councillor Robin Currie said: “This is a huge milestone for Gaelic in the Bute and Cowal area. Sandbank Primary has provided Gaelic medium unit for several years, but this new facility will accommodate pre-school and primary one pupils.
“Research shows that when children have a fully immersive Gaelic experience from age two or three, they are given the best opportunities to become fluent. Fluency in Gaelic is in turn, directly linked to attainment.
“The majority of families who choose Gaelic Medium Education don’t speak Gaelic at home but that isn’t necessarily a barrier to learning – there’s lot of support for parents, carers and children within the Gaelic community.
“This new unit shows the council’s commitment to the Gaelic language and has given families the community confidence to choose Gaelic education for their children.â€
