Eyes Open Approach encouraged for children at risk

People in 九秀直播 and Bute should keep their Eyes Open for children at risk during the school holidays. In the week that schools sound the end of term bell, Child Protection Committees across Scotland are encouraging the public to be extra observant to help protect potentially vulnerable children when school鈥檚 out for summer.

Road safety team encourages kids to 'get on your bike'

Pre-5 children across 九秀直播 and Bute are being given the opportunity to learn to ride a bike thanks to 九秀直播鈥檚 Road Safety Team.   The council currently offers iCycle training to all primary six and seven pupils, but over the last few years officers have noticed a gradual increase in the number of young people who cannot ride a bike by this stage.

Council boost for food manufacturing in 九秀直播 and Bute

  九秀直播 has agreed an investment of 拢100,000 to support the national and international growth of the area鈥檚 food sector. At its meeting today (Thursday 28 June), the council agreed in principle to provide Bute Islands Foods Ltd  with financial support to expand its vegan cheese business. The company produces a range of dairy free vegan cheese products under the brand 鈥淪heese鈥. The products are already stocked by several large UK retailers and exported to the EU and rest of the world.

Third round of community council by-elections to take place

Three communities in 九秀直播 could still have their own community council, with the decision today to hold a third round of by-elections. 九秀直播 held elections on 26 April 2018. This established 44 community councils out of a total of 56 across the area. Further by-elections were run on 26 June 2018 to encourage more nominations. Another nine community councils were successfully set up. The future of the three remaining 鈥 Ardentinny, Lismore and Sandbank 鈥 was considered at today鈥檚 meeting of 九秀直播.

Council agrees funding for new community sports centre

九秀直播 today agreed a grant of up to 拢100,000 to deliver a home for the area鈥檚 only affiliated boxing club and a new venue for community groups. Dunoon鈥檚 long-standing Amateur Boxing Club had secured financial backing from various investors including sportscotland. The council鈥檚 grant means that work can now progress to build a training venue for the club in the grounds of Dunoon Stadium. The facility will also be available for wider community use.

Work begins on 拢8million roads improvements

Work will begin on more than 拢8million worth of roads improvements across 九秀直播 and Bute in the coming weeks. A Capital Roads Reconstruction Budget of 拢8,382,000 was agreed by Council earlier this year, in addition to the day-to-day maintenance work like patching and filling potholes. The work is now due to get underway and residents can expect to see reconstruction of certain streets getting started over the summer.

Sandbank Gaelic Unit a popular choice

  Sandbank Primary School鈥檚 new early level Gaelic class is proving a popular choice, with all 24 of its registered spaces already taken.   The purpose Early Learning and Childcare facility, or Sgoil-脌raich as it is called in Gaelic, has been funded by the Scottish Government and will open its doors for the first time this August.

Rothesay pupils take part in innovative art project to address skills gap

Pupils from Rothesay Academy travelled to Ayrshire last week to take part in an innovative art project aimed at addressing a skills gap in the textile industry. Initiated by HRH The Duke of Rothesay, the Future Textiles at Dumfries House project aims to give young people an insight into the textile industry and provide them with the skills required to work in the field.

Focus groups need your feedback on Supporting Communities Fund pilot project

Members of the public are invited to attend one of four focus groups set up to gather feedback on the Supporting Communities Fund voting pilot project that took place in April 2018. 九秀直播 has commissioned independent research company Social Value Lab to evaluate the process, with all responses being anonymously included in a final report. If you voted in the Supporting Communities Fund Participatory Budgeting pilot project, your experiences will be valuable in assessing what was good about the process and what could be improved in the future.

Dunoon teacher wins 'UK Educator of the Year' accolade

A teacher from Dunoon Grammar School was awarded the title of Apps for Good鈥檚 鈥楿K Educator of the Year鈥 at a prestigious awards ceremony in London last week. Paul Gallanagh, Principal Teacher of Business and Computing, was at the Apps for Good final with pupils from the school when he received the accolade. Two teams of youngsters from Dunoon Grammar made it to the final after creating two unique mobile apps, 'safe sockets' and 'nightlight', and beating off stiff competition from 25,000 others.
