Keills Primary School

Keills Primary School serves several scattered, rural communities in the north-east of the island of Islay, from Bridgend to Bunnahabhain, in the area known as Kilmeny. The school is situated at the edge of the small village of Keills, on the main road to the ferry port of Port Askaig, with magnificent views of the Paps of Jura and the Sound of Islay.

The school building is of single storey brick construction and is in a good state of repair. Inside, there are three bright classrooms, each equipped with three or four computers, with a small ICT workstation, library and resource bank in the adjacent hallways. Two of the classrooms have a connecting double door, giving versatile use of the area. The separate, main hall is used for weekly assemblies, activity lessons and as a dining room and resource area. The school has its own kitchen which provides freshly cooked meals for pupils. There is a generous grass and tarred playground area to the rear.

Keills Primary is a member of the Islay and Jura Co-operative, which is made up of three other primary schools on Islay and the primary school on Jura, as well as the local secondary, Islay High School. The schools within the Co-operative work together to tackle and resource common improvement issues in a cohesive manner. All pupils and teachers benefit from Co-operative life, as it combats remoteness and provides opportunities to share the experiences of the small, rural schools, which are to be found on Islay and Jura.

The staff’s commitment to continuous improvement is evidenced by their dedication to the delivery of the programmes of study laid down in the 5-14 National Guidelines, with careful account taken of the individual needs, abilities and aptitudes of our children, thus providing high pupil motivation and consistent attainment of agreed targets.
